Day-by-day: Reparenting yourself with fun, discipline, love and hope.

A poem by Khalil-Alemayehu dedicated to finding gratitude when times are hard.

Gratitude in the Hard Hours

When the night feels heavier

than any coat I have worn,

I search for the smallest lights.

A kettle sighing.

A window that keeps its promise of morning.

A hand on my shoulder that does not need words.

Gratitude arrives softly,

not in grand speeches,

but in the warm hum of something still alive inside me.

In the stubborn green of a plant

that refuses to quit the windowsill.

In the way breath keeps returning

even when I forget to ask for it.

Hard times teach me to look closer.

To notice the quiet loyalty of ordinary things.

Steam rising from a cup.

The rhythm of rain stitching the world together again.

A memory that visits just long enough

to remind me I have survived before.

Hope grows in these small corners.

It does not argue.

It simply waits,

steady as a candle that knows

the dark cannot last forever.
